Hilary Dawson

Hilary worked as a Probation Officer supervising offenders in the community before a taking a degree in Community Theatre from the prestigious Rose Bruford College. She brings amazing skills to ignition including:

  • Real creative thinking and generation of solutions
  • Absolute clarity on use of experiential methods
  • A high level of training and facilitation skills

Theatre Work with offending behaviour

Hilary worked with Geese Theatre UK for almost a decade, providing energetic and engaging applied theatre inputs to prison and probation with all types of offenders, using drama and theatre-based methods for education and rehabilitation.

She was extensively involved in development of leading-edge therapeutically-informed work with violent offenders.

She also contributed significantly to the DVD-based aid to challenging offending behaviour for which Geese Theatre won a BAFTA award.

Criminal Justice Work

Hilary has provided specialist input in criminal justice throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as well as internationally, and continues to work with domestic abuse in the community and on substance misuse groups with convicted offenders in prison.

Creative work

Beyond offending behaviour work, Hilary has wide experience of the use of experiential methods with vulnerable groups, devising theatre with bullied young people, drug rehabilitation unit residents, in special hospitals, with MIND clients and with the elderly.

She is highly experienced in the use of experiential methods for training, working with the Judicial Studies Board and is a Lead Associate with ignition in the delivery of training focussing on these techniques.

This has included for supervisors in the Family Nurse Partnership, and for the company's group and one-to-one intervention programmes.

Hilary is a skilled role-player/facilitator in ignition's Life Scenario bespoke training team, combining targeted coaching on Motivational Interviewing skills with authentic feedback 'in role'.
